Fantasy novels often transport us to magical worlds filled with mythical creatures and enchanting landscapes. It’s no wonder why many women want to feel like they’re part of that world, even if it’s just through their hairstyles. Whether you’re a fan of the classic Game of Thrones or the new hit Fourth Wing, plenty of hairstyles can make you feel like you’re in a fantasy novel. From intricate braids to loose waves, I’ve rounded up some of the best hairstyles to transport you to another world. Read on to discover how you can achieve these magical looks and feel like a character in your own fairy tale.
Fourth Wing (Rebecca Yarros) – Violet Sorrengail’s Crown Braid
“A dragon without its rider is a tragedy. A rider without their dragon is dead. Welcome to the Fourth Wing.”
Violet Sorrengail is The fantasy icon of 2023. Not only is she a badass who (SPOILERS) bonds with TWO dragons, but she also has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (just like I do)! Rock her crown braid and imagine yourself walking across the parapet, or attending Basgiath War College in the mythical country of Navarre. Maybe you’ll find your own Xaden Riorson.
The Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins) – Katniss’s Side Braid
Let’s throw it back to the early 2010s! What a time to be alive – mustaches everywhere, crop tops as far as the eye can see, and JLaw running the world. Katniss Everdeen is a strong and resourceful young woman who lives in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem. When Katniss’s younger sister is chosen to participate in the Hunger Games, Katniss volunteers to take her place. Throughout the series, Katniss becomes a symbol of rebellion against the oppressive Capitol, inspiring the people of Panem to rise up against their rulers. She is known for her archery skills, bravery, and determination to protect her loved ones, as well as that iconic braid.
Outlander (Diana Gabaldon) – Everyone’s Braids and Updos!
Outlander is a historical drama television series based on the book series by Diana Gabaldon. The show follows the story of Claire Randall, a World War II nurse who is transported back in time to 18th-century Scotland. There, she meets and falls in love with Jamie Fraser, a Scottish warrior, and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite rising against the British. The show explores themes of love, loss, and the struggle for independence, as Claire navigates the challenges of living in a different time period and tries to find a way back to her own time. Along the way, she finds herself torn between her loyalty to her husband in the present day and her growing feelings for Jamie in the past. The show has gained a large following for its compelling characters, historical accuracy, and romantic storyline.
Harry Potter (J.K Rowling) – Hermione Granger’s curls
Hermione’s curly hair is a character onto itself in the childhood classic series Harry Potter. As one of the main characters and best friends of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, Hermione is known for her intelligence, bravery, and loyalty to her friends. She is often described as a “bookworm” and is known for her extensive knowledge of magic and the wizarding world. Hermione is a skilled witch who uses her intelligence and quick thinking to help Harry and Ron in their battles against Lord Voldemort and his followers. Throughout the series, Hermione faces many challenges and obstacles, but she always remains determined and focused on her goals. I wanted to be just like Hermione when I was a kid, right down to the curls that Emma Watson rocked in the movies. Try these four no-heat curling techniques to see what works best for you!
Game of Thrones (George R.R Martin) – Daenerys Targaryen and her many intricate braided updos
Daenerys Targaryen is a character from the popular HBO television series Game of Thrones, which is based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. She is the daughter of King Aerys II Targaryen, who was overthrown in a rebellion led by Robert Baratheon. Daenerys and her brother Viserys were exiled to Essos, where she is married off to Khal Drogo, a powerful Dothraki warlord. Over time, Daenerys becomes a strong and capable leader, freeing slaves and building an army to reclaim the Iron Throne for her family. She is often referred to as “the Mother of Dragons” due to her ability to hatch and control three dragons. Throughout the series, Daenerys faces many challenges and betrayals but ultimately emerges as a powerful and respected ruler. Her braids are intricate, and these hairstyles are not to be attempted by the faint of heart.
Sometimes the real world is, let’s face it, unpleasant. It’s the little things in life that make it worthwhile – like fun hairstyles, for instance. Everybody is always talking about romanticizing your life these days, and this is a way that I’ve found I can romanticize mine. Get your hair ties ready and let’s go!
